Real Weddings Dazzling Dresses: Leah C. Couture Millinery and J. Crew

Last week we were mad about the boy…but this week, we’re gaga for our gals. In addition to sharp selections for grooms-to-be, J. Crew also opened a new concept store on Madison Avenue in New York City. Yep, J. Crew went bridal!

I, personally, was really intrigued to see what the casual clothier will come up with for their new collection. And, you better believe it’s as fresh as a garden party on Martha’s Vineyard. Here’s a sneak peek:

And, it gets even better — if you’ve followed Real Weddings Magazine at all, you know we love custom millinery. One of our favorite milliners — Leah C. Couture Millinery (“Leah C.”), internationally known milliner and designer of hats and veils — has created unique headwear for J. Crew.

It has been “super exciting to work with J. Crew,” says Leah Chalfen, owner and designer of Leah C. “The demand for beautiful and unique wedding accessories is rising,” she adds, also noting that, “J. Crew has paired Leah C’s unique, couture headpieces with J. Crew’s flattering, comfortable and simply elegant wedding gowns.”

Leah’s partnership with the retailer is fitting as J. Crew emphasizes unique accessories and becomes more than just a clothing store. “In the past couple of years we’ve been looking at elevating every category,” said Jenna Lyons Mazeau, executive creative director of J. Crew. Ms. Mazeau notes that “when it’s quality, the customer gets it. We’re looking at doing special incredible pieces.” Molly Carey, designer for J. Crew Wedding Collection and Jewelry Designer is also “so excited because we are now collaborating. Leah C. will be doing some one-of-a-kind bridal pieces for J. Crew´s Wedding Collection!”

Leah C. Couture Millinery creates hats, veils, and hair accessories for weddings and special occasions in New York City and can be seen online at leahc.com.

Here’s a sampling of her work…

Real Weddings Partner Profiles: AdvantageBridal.com

Welcome back to another installment of Real Weddings Magazine’s Partner Profiles!

Today, we highlight the incredibly wonderful Sandy Keller of Advantage Bridal. Sandy’s always been so gracious to allow us to borrow some of her fabulous wedding accessories for our photo shoots. Have you been to her site lately? Yeah, lots of really cool wedding stuff there!

Take it away Sandy!

AdvantageBridal.com

Specialty?  Wedding and special occasion attire, accessories and gifts.

When did you establish your business?  1992, within minutes of delivering my third child.

What sets you apart from your competition?  We have the largest online selection, and manufacture many of our own products so they are exclusive to us alone.

Where do you find inspiration?  Reading fashion journals and following the latest styles celebrities are wearing, shopping the malls, nature, old architecture.

When you opened shop, what was your promise to your customers?  To deliver top quality products at affordable prices, in the most timely manner.

Do you have any hidden talents?  Mind-reading, particularly my husband’s. Driving fast and not getting a traffic ticket. Tweeting, something I previously thought only birds did.

What song is the soundtrack to your business day (or at least to how you feel right now)?  “When You Wish Upon A Star”

Wine, Champagne, Beer or Cocktail?  If you are buying, I would like to order a mint mojito!!

What is your favorite flower?  Stargazer Lily

Do you regularly blog? What’s your blog site?  Yes, site.advantagebridal.com/blog

Where is your favorite place to travel?  New Orleans—bless dem boys!!

If you weren’t in the wedding industry, what would you be doing?  Jumping feet first into establishing a foundation to help women with breast cancer. Since I am in the wedding industry, I have to rein myself in and take baby steps, but I am establishing a non-profit this year for women who cannot afford reconstruction.

What three things are you most grateful for in life?  My supportive husband, my healthy children and my wonderful friends.

If you were to plan your own wedding, or re-do your wedding, what element would be most important to you?  I would have a party this time! We had a tiny wedding in Las Vegas and didn’t celebrate it in a big way.

What is the best advice you can give to brides and grooms getting married today? Order everything early!  We get so many last minute orders and we just hate to disappoint brides with news that we can’t give them what they desire to have on their wedding day or honeymoon. Also, manufacturers discontinue products frequently, and if they wait to buy it later, it may not be available.

Anything else you’d like to share with  Real Weddings Magazine’s  brides?  If you have an idea for custom apparel, let us know and we’ll create it for you! We specialize in unique items and making wedding accessories that are unique to each bride.

Find out more about Sandy and her team at AdvantageBridal.com online or by calling them at 877-933-7467.

For the Love of Etsy

You might be like, “Etsy, what the heck is that?”

Etsy is actually an online source for handmade gifts, posted by a variety of artistic vendors from across the country. Think of it as a really cool crafts fair on the Web. I’ve been going here for unique gifts for several years, but it wasn’t until recently when I made a handmade bow tie purchase that I realized what a great hub this site can be for wedding stuff.

I’m sure many of you would like to make your own wedding favors or cake toppers, and if you have the time and the talent, go for it! For others, it’s not always easy to squeeze a hot glue gun into the schedule. So, before you employ your mom or bridesmaids on putting together little projects, check out Etsy and see what other creative folks have to offer. Here are some of my favorites by their seller name:

MeandMatilda
Perfect for the outfitting the groom and his guys, this purveyor of custom neckties, bow ties and bridal accessories offers a wide range of fashionable damask, polka dots, stripes, solids and more. “Classic style with a modern twist so everyone can journey in style.”

JustToppers
Here’s the icing on the cake. Just Toppers provides personal and unique selection of custom cake toppers, including monograms and other popular wedding themes.

BridalBlissDesigns
A wedding gown and bridesmaid dress designer who specializes in “custom design reproduction” with quality fabrics and materials, like chiffon, taffeta and organza depending on the style of the dress.

TrialByCupcakes
Does wedding invitation calligraphy and makes beautiful hand drawn wedding invitation maps to order.

JessicasDesignShop
Creator of unique and visually interesting wedding announcements, invitations, place cards and more.

BridalEmUnique
Jewelry designer making one-of-a-kind handcrafted pieces with crocheted elements, gemstones and sterling and gold-filled finding.

HeKnowsMyName
Offers an assortment of veils, headbands, flowers and other hair accessories.

PetereneDesign
Fabulous custom garters so cool you might not want your groom to toss.
