When City Center broke ground several years ago, Vegas was experiencing a real estate boom that rivaled many hot spots around the country. At that time, in addition to new hotels, casinos, restaurants and retail spaces, investors hoped to cash in on a chic new condominium high-rise next door to the stylish Bellagio.

When the real estate market took a sharp turn for the worst, so did the plans for selling the stately new structures as condos. Though bad news for the investors, this turn of events became great news for Vegas travelers, as the property soon debuted at the Cosmopolitan, a glamorous new hotel address on an ever-crowded Strip.

What I love about the Cosmo is its intimacy. It’s nowhere near as large as some of its neighbors, like the colossal Caesars Palace or opulent Bellagio. Tall and lean, the Cosmopolitan doesn’t feel like your typical casino. It feels more like a boutique hotel.

The first three floors are stacked with the typical Vegas draws – gambling, shops, bars and restaurants. The other floors of the two towers are devoted to smart looking studios and suites. Ascending the first floors of the Cosmopolitan is not unlike navigating a chandelier, with layers and layers of luminous crystals and sparking amenities.

Recommended Resort:  Cosmopolitan Las Vegas. Accommodation options abound at the Cosmo, from sleek Terrace Studios to City Rooms to Wrap Around Terrace Suites. Small details like Phaidon art books, Andrew Morgan throws, and Jonathan Adler ceramic accents give the rooms that boutique vibe.

Our room had a balcony, a rarity in Vegas, with lovely views of the Paris, Planet Hollywood and the Strip. The bathrooms are large and nicely appointed. If the bathtub doesn’t cut it for decompressing, head down to the Sahra Spa and indulge in one of their amazing treatments.

There are also three separate pools to enjoy the dry Vegas heat, in the cool water or shaded by a cabana.

Check Out:  The Retail. Sure, you could go next door to the City Center for big names like Louis Vuitton and Tom Ford, but we were digging the unique boutiques on the Cosmo’s fashionable 2nd floor.

Highlights include the current men’s and women’s looks at All Saints and the bespoke men’s retailer Stitched. But, by far, my favorite was RetroSpecs and Co. This purveyor of vintage eyewear offers everything from turn-of-the-century specs to hip mid-century aviators to fly ’70s and ’80s statements. A must visit for the spectacled.

Don’t Miss:  The Restaurants. The key is variety when putting a handful of choice restaurants together, and the Cosmopolitan has certainly assembled an admirable mix.

There’s Comme Ça, an excellent French Bistro, Blue Ribbon Sushi and Grill for the hand roll set, and the Greek flavors found at Estiatorio Milos. The most hopping joint on Saturday night was definitely STK, a New York eatery serving up steaks, cocktails and tunes late into the night. Fans of chef José Andrés will enjoy the China meets Mexico offerings at China Poblano, where noodles and tacos live happily ever after. Room for dessert? His take on flan’s a sure bet. Delicioso!
