Real Weddings Mini-Moon: The Citizen Hotel

I heart the Joie de Vivre collection of boutique hotels. This California company has transformed forgotten real estate treasures into some of the coolest, most cleverly designed and affordable accommodations around…from Sonoma to Orange Counties.

One of the best examples is right here in Sacramento. The Citizen Hotel skillfully combines the elegance of a bygone era with modern luxuries and hospitality. Its prime Downtown location, right in the action of our historic center, makes it a fun getaway for the couple who wants to fall in love with their city all over again.

Recommended Hotel: The Citizen Hotel. Like other hotels in the Joie de Vivre collection, unique design elements stand out top to bottom.

At The Citizen, an homage to the nearby Capitol and courthouse is evident in the two floors of law books that decorate the polished lobby with striking red check in desk front and center.

There are 198 boutique-style rooms and suites and each includes an all-access, in-room media service courtesy of an Apple Mac Mini computer. In addition to room service, there’s a complimentary wine hour every Monday through Friday.

Check In:  926 J Street in Downtown Sacramento. 916-447-2700, thecitizenhotel.com

Check Out:  Grange Restaurant. One of Sacramento’s social hot spots, this popular restaurant prides itself on “reflecting the authentic essence and soul of its community.”

A 31-year veteran of the industry, chef Michael Tuohy is one of the leading proponents of the Slow Food Movements and is the champion behind this farm-to-table eatery in the heart of the capital.

The city’s close proximity to Napa’s wine region inspires Grange’s impressive wine list. If you’re in the mood for incredible seasonal fare buy one of California’s finest chefs, look no further than the lobby of The Citizen.

Don’t Miss:  Joie de Vivre Gives. A true California grassroots organization, the Joie de Vivre company looks to make a positive impact on the community it serves. One way they regularly give back is by donating a minimum of $200 per guest room per year to organizations in the community.

In 2008, they began asking guests to donate an additional one dollar to their check out bill as part of their You Can Difference program. The Citizen’s philanthropic partner, the Child Abuse Protection Center, helps children of Sacramento County at risk of abuse, neglect or abandonment. For Joie de Vivre, a little goes a long way.

Real Weddings Magazine Inspiration Board: Presenting Rachel Leach and Darren McCarty

The Couple:  Rachel Leach and Darren McCarty

Wedding Date:  June 26, 2010

Photography by Sarah Maren Photography

Tell us a little about you and your beloved:  Darren and I met five years ago when we worked at the same company together. I’m the social butterfly and he is the the quick wit! We’re really are a perfect match!

What was the most amazing part of your day?  As any other bride would say, “The whole day was amazing!” But if I had to narrow it down… I definitely have a top three.

(1) The Reveal: the moment that I saw Darren for the first time on our wedding day was unforgettable. Once we saw each other, all the background noise faded away, and I was left with the calm silence of holding my husband-to-be.

(2) Dancing with my father: Everyone who knows me… knows that this was the pinnacle of my life to date. Being the baby of the family and having a father plagued by heart disease… dancing with Dad was a big deal.

(3) Sunset Photos: Not only did our photographers make us feel like super models… but my new husband and I got to hold each other on the rooftop… watching the sun set on the city where we had fallen in love with each other. It was the perfect day.

What else would you like to share about your big day?  Our families and friends are AMAZING. We absolutely could not have had such a memorable day had it not been for the tireless efforts of our family and close friends.

Whether it was making gift bags, running to the ATM, or distracting 5-7 nieces and nephews… no one hesitated to say, “How can I help?” We tried to plan a wedding where our friends and family would have an amazing time… and it turns out, they are the reason it was an amazing time.

DJ/Entertainment/Band: Supernatural Soundz

Honeymoon location:  Oh my goodness… well, it was supposed to be Playa del Carmen in Mexico. Unfortunately, Hurricane Alex (first of the season) hit the day after our wedding… which was the day before our departure. Luckily, I learned quickly that I married the right man… because he had purchased trip insurance!! Which gave us enough wiggle room to plan an impromptu honeymoon in San Diego, CA. I wouldn’t have changed a thing!!

Any other of your wedding vendor(s) you’d like to call out?  Hamilton’s Jewelers (Sacramento… especially Daniel, my rings are AMAZING!!), Fontaine Dance (Roseville), All Seasons All Reasons Fine Catering (catered my parents cocktail party the evening before the wedding), Judge Tom Cecil, Ten22 (Old Sacramento… especially Koreena Schulz, they hosted our rehearsal dinner and were phenomenal)

First Dance Song:  Forever by Ben Harper

Any advice you’d give to our readers who are planning their weddings right now?  Holy smokes… ENJOY IT!!! Say thank you more than you think you should. Remember that your fiance asked you to marry him before you determined a “goal weight.” And throw as many parties as you can… this is the one time it is all about you two!!

Anything that you would have done differently if you were given the chance?  Not a single thing.

Real Weddings Magazine Inspiration Board: Presenting Nicole and Justin Hill

The Couple:  Nicole and Justin Hill

Wedding Date:  September 20, 2009

Photography by Jacqueline Photography

Tell us a little about you and your beloved:  From Nicole: Justin has so many different sides to his personality. He can be a big kid, he can be a protector when he feels someone as wronged me, he can be gentle and caring and give me that look that makes me melt.. but above all, I trust him with everything – my heart, my soul, he is my Superman.

I always know that no matter what obstacles come our way we will handle them and we will get through them together. In every relationship, I always felt like I had to be the strong one that had to hold it up no matter what, I couldn’t talk about my doubts or my fears because those relationships didn’t instill that innate feeling of trust and stability that you have to have in a partner in order to reveal those things about yourself. But Justin makes me feel safe, safe enough to feel vulnerable and to love him with my whole heart and for that I feel truly blessed.

From Justin: Nicole is everything that is good in me. Without hesitation, she takes care of everyone but herself, she has the most perfect smile, laugh, touch. She is, for all intents and purposes, perfect. She can always calm me down if I get upset, and she always has a cool, level head. With all the challenges we face everyday, I just know with one look or one touch, that everything is going to be alright.

What was the most amazing part of your day?  Becoming husband and wife. There is something magical and deeply spiritual about standing up in front of friends and family and declaring your love and your life intentions toward another person. We were very traditional in the fact that we didn’t see each other after the rehearsal which was 2 days before the wedding, so the build-up to that moment was pretty intense.

We wrote our own vows which neither one of us heard from the other until the wedding and it was absolutely amazing that we said many of the same things and that our last words in them to one another were almost identical. It was one of those things that made us know even more that we were really meant to be together.

What else would you like to share about your big day?  One of the things that made the day so wonderful was that it was a very personal day for us right from the moment we got engaged. Our theme was God Bless the Broken Road and our wedding coordinators developed a custom symbol for us, 2 individual paths intertwining into one, that weaved itself throughout our entire ceremony.

This symbol was on our save the dates, invitations and on the floor in rose petals as the path we each walked to get to one another to say our vows.  It was used in so many different ways and just served to help reiterate that we were two people coming together as one.

Any other of your wedding vendor(s) you’d like to call out?  Sacramento Theatrical Lighting, Mimi & Company, Cloth Connection, Celebrations Party Rentals

First Dance Song:  God Bless The Broken Road by Rascal Flatts

Any advice you’d give to our readers who are planning their weddings right now?  Remember to enjoy the process of the entire engagement and wedding experience, but remember the weddding is just the beginning of your journey together and that the whole purpose is to join your life with this other person’s.

Planning a wedding can have some stressful moments, especially when you start getting closer and things start to get hectic, it’s important to slow down, take some time with one another and remember why you’re doing it.

Anything that you would have done differently if you were given the chance?  I think we would have started the wedding a little earlier so we had more time with our friends and family. The whole day felt like it went by so quickly. We always joke that everything was so perfect that we wish we could do it again.
